Nonsymmetric inhomogeneous step expansion in a plane‐parallel waveguide is studied. Its coupling with the regular channel is arranged through a closely spaced grating of metal strips on the substrate. Scattering characteristics are found from the solution of the electromagnetic problem by use of the double‐side equivalent boundary conditions and the method of moments. The influence of the resonant cavity parameters on single‐mode and multimode regimes of work is analyzed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
