Novel balanced shunt variable attenuators with quasi‐lumped branch‐line couplers are introduced. The inner branches of the two couplers are merged, and parasitic capacitances in the control devices are absorbed into the couplers, saving space. An HMIC example is described. The technique is attractive in MMIC design, where saving space reduces costs. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
