Scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by perfectly conducting prolate and oblate spheroids at axial incidence is investigated theoretically. The first two terms in the high‐frequency asymptotic expansions of the scattered fields are derived. Numerical results for a 2‐to‐1 prolate spheroid are compared with the experimental data. It is shown that the asymptotic solutions are valid in both resonance and quasioptics regions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
