In this work we present a numerical study on the performance of optically amplified systems operating in optical networks considering both TDM and WDM techniques. Soliton and NRZ intensity‐modulated signals have been taken into account. Signal propagation has been studied in the presence of chromatic dispersion, Kerr effect, polarization‐mode dispersion, and the ASE noise of the optical amplifiers by numerically solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The system performance is studied in terms of the Q factor. As a reference we have considered a metropolitan‐area network with a star topology, and considerations on the ring networks and on the shuffle multihop networks are reported. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
