In this article a novel optical nondestructive evaluation technique based on real‐time particle image velocimetry has been proposed for the single‐cell contractile force measurement. The optical experimental setup is described. Some preliminary experimental results on the measured fluid velocity field and its potential application to the single‐cell contractile force measurement are presented. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
