We evaluated the performance of transmission systems operating at 1.3 μm in links encompassing standard single‐mode fibers and in‐line semiconductor optical amplifiers. Intensity‐ and polarized‐modulated systems are compared in terms of Q factor for soliton and NRZ signals at different bit rates and distances. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
