A method is described for the synthesis of planar array antenna patterns where both the configuration and the excitation of each radiating element is determined from the desired contour, ripple, and side lobes of controlled height. The method is based on a repetitive optimization procedure that obtains a very significant reduction in the number of elements that are excited, establishing a marked improvement with respect to the corresponding techniques described in the prior literature. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
