A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) is periodically inhomogeneous along its spirality axis. An exact analytic solution for oblique (i.e., off‐axis) propagation in a CLC is presented for the first time. The solution involves only the addition and multiplication of 4 × 4 matrices, and it can be evaluated to an arbitrary degree of precision because it is expressed as a uniformly convergent series. ©1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
