Abstract It is pointed out that the solution to the electrostatic problem of an isolated conducting ellipsoid is a far‐field approximation. To show this conclusion, several existing methods are discussed. Some basic problems, such as singular field distribution, are then commented upon. ©1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
