A ray‐optics analysis of quadratic‐index cladded tapers is presented. Analytical solutions for trajectories of meridional rays are obtained for tapers with small angles. The requirements for zero radiation loss and the conditions under which a beam of parallel rays at the taper input emerges as a condensed beam of parallel rays at the output are determined. Applications of these tapers as beam concentrators for increasing power coupled from narrow‐beam light sources into optical fibers, as beam expanders to achieve better alignment tolerances for in‐line micro‐optic devices, and as power combiners for wavelength‐division multiplexing are addressed. ©1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
