A novel mode‐locked fiber laser gyro is proposed. The optical system is composed of a Sagnac loop with an elliptical polarization‐maintaining fiber, a LiNbO 3 waveguide integrated optic circuit, and an Er‐doped fiber amplifier. The rotation rate can be measured from the shift of peak position of output pulse. A simple analysis and a related experiment are conducted. ©1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
