Experimental investigations on the impedance bandwidth of a square microstrip patch antenna, surrounded by square rings and shorted to ground plane, are reported. The addition of three square rings, shorted to the ground, and a square patch resulted in an 18% impedance bandwidth(1:4 VSWR) with unchanged radiation pattern and about 7% shift of resonance frequency. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
