The optimum resonating conditions for a three‐coupler double‐ring (TCDR) fiber resonator are presented. Special attention is paid to the circulating intensity and the reduction factor. The dependence of the resonance characteristics on the ratio of the lengths of the two rings (RoL), the coupling coefficients of the directional couplers, and the loss factors are investigated. A comparison of the sensitivities for RoL>1 and RoL≈1 is carried out. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
