Simple derivation of the complex constitutive parameters of an isotropic, lossy chiral slab from free‐space measurement data is presented. The ambiguities in the solutions are commented upon. Uncertainties of the parameters are given in an analytic form as a function of the measurement uncertainties. The analytic equations are applied to wideband measurement data. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
