We present a theoretical analysis and experimental results for the most suitable configuration of pump power in a two‐stage erbium‐doped fiber amplifier. The amplifiers are arranged in a copropagating pump scheme and use large signal input and modest pump power. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
