A novel optical filter in frequency range based on a Fabry‐Perot structure with two reflective fiber grating mode converters is proposed. The output of this optical filter is shown to have only one transmission peak, which has a frequency bandwidth as narrow as several megahertz. The characteristic of this optical frequency filter is greatly improved by introducing a gain mechanism using a rare‐earth‐doped filter. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
