Dispersion and impedance characteristics have been obtained for a completely shielded edge‐coupled conductor‐backed coplanar waveguide. It is demonstrated that dielectric loading can considerably improve these characteristics with respect to mode coupling. On the other hand, the unloaded structure can yield directivity couplers. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
