We investigate a new rectangular element for the Reissner–Mindlin model based on the primitive variable system. Nonconforming rotated Q 1 element is used to approximate the transverse displacement, and the biquadratic element is used for the rotation. A convergent error estimate is obtained, which is independent of the thickness of the plate. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 16: 184–193, 2000
