A space‐time finite element method is introduced to solve a model forward‐backward heat equation. The scheme uses the continuous Galerkin method for the time discretization. An error analysis for the method is presented. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 15: 257–265, 1999
