The use of computer simulations together with the ability of on‐line visualisation and animation of the simulation data provides a powerful tool for studying the microscopic and macroscopic properties of atoms and molecules. In this work, we are concerned with the development of a visualisation environment where simulation, image rendering, and animation are integrated to provide detailed information about the behavior of a growing surface. An interactive environment for monitoring the effect of changing parameters on surface growth is realized. The animation on a workstation as well as animation using video equipment is described and results are presented. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
