The present study examined the validity of the Preference Test (PT), a questionnaire that intends to measure the extent to which subjects rely on right‐hemisphere and left‐hemisphere cognitions. Normal subjects ( N = 20) completed the PT and were then assigned to a group with a relatively strong preference for left‐hemisphere cognitions or a group with a relatively strong preference for right‐hemisphere cognitions. Next, background EEG was recorded. Subjects with a preference for right‐hemisphere cognitions were found to display relatively more α power over the left than over the right frontal areas, compared to subjects with a preference for left‐hemisphere cognitions. This finding provides partial support for the validity of the PT. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Clin Psychol 53 : 739–744, 1997.
