N ‐Alkylacrylamides and N ‐acylacrylamides were synthesized by a novel synthetic approach, namely, the Friedel–Craft reaction of acrylamide with alkyl chloride and acyl chloride, respectively. The reactions took place smoothly at room temperature and the time required for the reactions was very short. The monomers so synthesized were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and 1 H‐NMR spectroscopy. Characterization data are in agreement with the proposed structures of the products. Thus, a convenient method for the synthesis of N ‐alkylacrylamides was developed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 73: 1845–1850, 1999
