Fourier transform infrared–photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR–PA) has been used to investigate the adsorption of poly( n ‐butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) from solution on alumina. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the FTIR–PA spectra of PnBMA adsorbed from cyclohexane, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride on alumina were performed. The efficiency of adsorption was found to increase in the order of C 6 H 12 > CCl 4 > C 6 H 6 . Methanol and tetrahydrofuran, on the other hand, showed negative adsorption. The effects of temperature and the amount of adsorbent were also investigated and it was observed that the adsorption of PnBMA has a negative temperature coefficient. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
