Bhilawanut shell liquid is a natural product, and because of its phenolic nature it undergoes reactions similar to those of phenol. Surface coatings based on BSL were prepared from formaldehyde, styrene, hexamine, and epichlorohydrin for the protection of bamboo surfaces. BSL‐based coatings were applied on bamboo and the performance of these coatings was evaluated by accelerated and chemical resistance tests. It was observed that these coatings can be used for the protection of bamboo from corrosive environments. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 487–493, 1998
