The polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out in aqueous media having various concentrations of potassium persulfate as initiator in the presence or the absence of montmorillonite (Texas) at various temperatures. The rate of polymerization increased with increasing initiator concentration. Thermal stabilities of the resulting composite materials were studied and the activation energies of polymerization and degradation were determined. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
