In this article, the chemical modification of poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) was carried out by incorporating an amine group into the PPO backbone. A maximum monosubstitution degree of 65 mol % was reached. The effects of reaction conditions on the functional group content in PPO is discussed. The aminated PPO obtained was characterized by FTIR, 1 H‐NMR spectroscopy, nitrogen analysis, DSC, solubility test, and X‐ray diffraction studies. % 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
