Inhomogeneous liquids in the presence of an external potential areconsidered. Exact force balance equations are written explicitly for (a)the classical case with pairwise interactions and (b) the ground‐statequantal case of fermions with a general interaction, which embraces theCoulomb repulsion for electrons. Illustrative examples are given in bothcases (a) and (b). Finally, a link between (a) and (b) is forged byconsidering the case of ensembles of finite systems. © 1997 JohnWiley & Sons, Inc.
