A discharge flow reactor coupled to a laser‐induced fluorescence (LIF) detector and a mass spectrometer was used to study the kinetics of the reactions CH 3 O+Br→products (1) and CH 3 O+BrO→products (2). From the kinetic analysis of CH 3 O by LIF in the presence of an excess of Br or BrO, the following rate constants were obtained at 298 K: k 1 =(7.0±0.4)×10 −11 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 and k 2 =(3.8±0.4)×10 −11 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 . The data obtained are useful for the interpretation of other laboratory studies of the reactions of CH 3 O 2 with Br and BrO. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 30: 249–255, 1998.
