We analyzed the serum levels of type IV collagen, a major component of the basement membrane, during various stages of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Serum concentrations of type IV collagen increased significantly with the duration of illness. Findings indicate that the metabolism of type IV collagen and the basement membrane may be affected in the disease process of ALS. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Muscle Nerve 23: 430–432, 2000
