It is demonstrated that HSQC gives considerably simpler multiplets than HMQC, allowing precise extraction of proton–proton coupling constants. Application of a spin‐locking pulse prior to acquisition yields pure‐phase 13 C decoupled multiplets. The combined use of coupled and refocused HSQC allows second‐order structure of the proton multiplets to be avoided in favourable cases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
