The first 19 F, 13 C HMQC correlations with full carbon decoupling and the first HMBC correlations using fluorine detection methods are reported, and combined with 19 F‐decoupled 13 C data and 19 F, 19 F COSY and TOCSY to derive the 19 F and 13 C assignments for the highly fluorinated alkanol 8,8,8 7,7 6,6 5,5 4,4 3,3‐tridecafluorooctan‐1‐ol. The analyses of unique sets of multiple 19 F, 13 C and 1 H, 13 C cross peaks provides information about the relative signs of the coupling constants at the fluorocarbon/hydrocarbon interface. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
