Raman and IR studies of a single orthorhombic crystal and of polycrystalline trigonal RbIn(MoO 4 ) 2 were performed at ambient temperature. The observed vibrational modes were assigned to the respective motions of atoms in the unit cells. It was shown that the first‐order D 3 d 3 → D 2 h 16 phase transition leads to very significant changes in the vibrational properties of the crystal studied. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
