The effects of chloro ions on surface‐enhanced Ramanscattering (SERS) of a probe compound, p ‐hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), on colloidal silver, excited in the visible and near‐infrared (NIR)regions are reported. For visible excitation, the intensities of SERSsignals of PHBA molecules are rapidly and greatly decreased withaddition of chloro ions. In contrast, when excited in the NIR region,SERS spectra of PHBA molecules before and after the addition ofchloro ions are comparable in intensity. This indicates aconsiderable difference in the SERS mechanisms for visible and NIRexcitation. The charge‐transfer transition resonance between asilver surface and adsorbates via Ag–Cl active sites isdominant in NIR SERS, and the increased enhancement factors of NIRSERS modes are estimated to be in the range 10 5 –10 6 .
