The infrared and Raman spectra of Cd(CN) 2 ·CCl 4 clathrate are reported. A normalcoordinate analysis and a Raman intensity analysis on the basis ofthe modified many‐body model were carried out to clarify theassignments of the observed bands and to examine the intensitychanges of the four vibrational modes of CCl 4 on goingfrom gaseous CCl 4 to the clathrate. It was found that theRaman intensity of ν 1 of CCl 4 is relativelyenhanced in the clathrate compared with the gaseous state. This isexplained in terms of the many‐body model. The phasetransition was found at 220 K, which is ascribed to ordering of CCl 4 molecules, although it is not clear whether the phasetransition is of first or second order.
