The Fourier transform FT infrared and FT‐Raman spectra of a π‐conjugated thiophene‐based oligomer were studied. The compound has a well–barrier–well structure, where the well parts are two bithiophene end moieties and the barrier part is a methylene fragment with a larger energy gap. Characteristic vibrational features are compared with those obtained on series of unsubstituted α‐linked oligothiophenes and of α,α′‐dimethyl end‐capped oligothiophenes, in order to estimate the effective conjugation length of this compound in the solid state. Vibrational assignments are also proposed for the main bands over the whole spectral range. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
