Diffuse reflectance spectra of KO 2 and of caesium oxide containing the O 2 ‐ ion exhibit a broad absorption maximum near 300 nm extending into the visible range, due to the 1π g ←1π u transition of this ion. Raman spectra of these substances excited at 457.9 nm show the O 2 ‐ fundamental and first overtone with moderate intensity, and in the case of caesium oxide the second overtone is also weakly observed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
