Raman spectroscopy was applied to silicon carbide/carbon continuous fibre‐reinforced ceramic matrix composites to study the microstructure and composition changes in the fibres in the matrices after the consolidation of the composite at high temperatures by hot pressing, and also the stress distributions in the composites using the reinforced fibres as sensors. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
