Resonance Raman spectra were recorded from 1‐(2‐pyridylazo)‐2‐naphthol (HPAN) adsorbed from toluene solution on to Aerosils 90, 130, 200 and 300 and γ‐alumina. In each case HPAN adsorption gave a good fit to a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The spectra indicate that the adsorbed species consists mainly of physisorbed HPAN but there is also evidence for chemisorption of the protonated species (H 2 PAN + ). The latter results from interaction with Brønsted acidic sites on both silica and γ‐alumina. For HPAN adsorbed on γ‐alumina there is also evidence for interaction with Lewis acidic sites.
