Abstract This paper presents a theory on which to base intervention research in the construction industry, along with a hypothetical case study involving construction painters. The hypothetical case is based on data from research in a three‐state study of construction painters currently under way. Difficulties facing researchers who conduct research in construction are described. Advantages of the intervention research design for construction are discussed. © 1996 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
