This paper describes the application of a parametric transition rate model, the generalized log‐logistic model, to the duration of first admissions to psychiatric institutions. The final model included diagnosis, gender, age, living conditions and year of admission as covariates. Characteristics of the log‐logistic model are described extensively. Parametric transition models offer challenging and promising possibilities to model duration of hospital stay. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
