2‐Aminoacridone derivatives of complex glycans, released from hen ovalbumin, have been chromatographed on a hydrophilic interaction column and fractions collected for analysis by a matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometer operated in the positive and negative ion modes. Such flexibility in detection has proved to be very useful in the preliminary characterization of a wide range of neutral and sialylated oligosaccharides covalently bound to this glycoprotein. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
