The mass spectrometric behaviour of eight ω‐hydroxyalkyltriphenylphosphonium bromides was studied with the aid of mass‐analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry and high resolution data under fast‐atom bombardment ionization. The fragmentation mechanism of a series of fragment ions at m/z 275, 289, 303, … is described in detail. All the compounds show [2M + Br] + ions because of association by hydrogen bonding. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
