A Knudsen effusion assembly with a tantalum heating element was developed and combined with a quadrupole QMG‐420 mass spectrometer for thermodynamic studies at high temperatures. The reliability of the thermodynamic data that can be obtained using this installation was illustrated for Ag, CsCl and Mg. Partial pressures of vapour species and enthalpies of sublimation of Ag and of CsCl are in agreement with the data recommended by IUPAC. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
