Singly charged vanadium cluster ions from an external laser‐vaporization source are accumulated in a Penning trap. They are subjected to electron bombardment which leads to further ionization. The charge states produced are analyzed by time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry after axial ejection from the trap. The results include the observation of charge states up to z = 6 and indications for signals at z = 7 and 8. Clusters of a given charge state may be selected for further investigation adding a new dimension to future studies of stored cluster ions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
