A new derivatization reaction was developed for the characterization of organic acids by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in the highly sensitive positive‐ion mode, using N,N ′‐dicyclohexylcarbodimide and N,N ′‐dimethylethylenediamine. Suitability of the reaction was demonstrated on different types of organic acids. When selected‐ion monitoring was applied, the detection limit was at the low femtomol level. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
