Long‐chain hydrocarbons may easily be identified by positive‐ion chemical ionization using acetonitrile as reactant gas in an ion trap, due to the favoured formation of [M+CH 2 CN] + cations. The results are practically independent of manifold temperature, indicating that the ions produced are thermally more stable than the usual [MH] + species generated by reaction with protonating media.
