In Part I of this paper we examine the notion of invariant quantities in problems encountered in computational mechanics. These invariant quantities are then used to verify results obtained by numerical techniques. Examples in rigid‐body dynamics, elastostatics and unsteady‐state heat flow are presented. In Part II, we use the invariant quantities to compute consistent local errors in a finite‐element analysis.
