The paper describes an energy‐conserving procedure for the implicit non‐linear dynamic analysis of planar beam structures. The method is based on a form of co‐rotational technique which is ‘external to the element’. A range of numerical results are presented which clearly demonstrate the improved numerical performance in comparison with more conventional techniques.
