The recent World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathology classification of urothelial neoplasms should redefine the clinical as well as the pathologic approach to “bladder cancer.” Separating benign tumors associated with a low risk for the subsequent development of cancer from true carcinomas should emphasize the importance of cytopathology for monitoring, decrease the percentage of truly superficial bladder carcinomas, and benefit patients who present with low grade, noninvasive, papillary urothelial neoplasms.
