More prospective studies, such as that of Fowler and Bigler in this issue of Cancer, are needed to confirm and expand our understanding of racial factors related to prostate carcinoma. As these authors correctly note, differential risk has important implications for screening and early detection. Emphasis should also be placed on determining what genetic factors determine race and whether these factors are linked to the risk of prostate carcinoma. See also pages 836–41.
